Lemon oil smells like a freshly cleaned kitchen on a sunny morning. It's bright, sharp and energizing, and one of the most useful oils around the house.
What is lemon essential oil?
Lemon oil is cold-pressed from the peel of Citrus limon. Like orange, it's rich in limonene, but it has a sharper, cleaner scent.
Benefits of lemon oil
1. Energizes and helps you focus
Lemon's crisp scent is a natural pick-me-up. Diffuse it in the morning or at your desk when you need to get things done.
2. A natural cleaner and degreaser
Lemon is a classic in homemade cleaning products. It cuts through grease and leaves a fresh, clean scent behind.
3. Freshens the air
It neutralizes cooking smells and makes rooms feel brighter.
4. Removes sticky residue
A drop of lemon oil on a cloth can help lift sticker residue from glass and hard surfaces. (Test on a hidden spot first.)
How to use lemon oil
- Diffuser: 3–5 drops.
- All-purpose spray: 15–20 drops in a spray bottle with 1 cup of water and 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Shake before use. Avoid natural stone like marble.
- Wood polish: 10 drops in 2 tablespoons of olive oil, buffed in with a soft cloth.
- Body oil: only in products you'll wash off, or that you'll wear in the evening. See the safety tip below.
Lemon blends well with
Peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus, ginger and basil. For a "clean home" diffuser blend, try 3 drops lemon + 2 drops lavender.
The key safety tip: lemon and sunlight
Cold-pressed lemon oil is phototoxic. If you put it on skin and then go into the sun or a tanning bed, it can cause burns, redness or dark patches. To stay safe:
- Keep lemon at no more than 2% in anything you leave on skin (about 12 drops per 30 ml / 1 oz of carrier oil).
- Or avoid sun exposure on that area for 12 hours after applying.
- Wash-off products like body wash and diffusing don't carry this risk.
Other side effects and safety tips
- Always dilute before skin use and patch test first.
- Citrus oils oxidize faster. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
- Don't swallow essential oils. Keep away from children and pets.
- Check with your doctor if pregnant, breastfeeding or managing a medical condition.

Frequently asked questions
Can I add lemon essential oil to my water?
No. Essential oils aren't meant to be swallowed, and they don't mix with water. Use a slice of fresh lemon instead.
Does lemon oil lighten dark spots?
There's no good evidence for it, and because lemon oil is phototoxic, putting it on your face before sun exposure can actually cause dark patches.
Does lemon oil kill germs?
Lemon oil has some antimicrobial activity in lab studies, but it isn't a replacement for a registered disinfectant.
How long does lemon oil last?
Citrus oils are the shortest-lived. Use within about a year of opening.
