Cold air outside, dry heat inside, long hot showers to warm up. Winter is hard on skin. By December a lot of us are dealing with tight, flaky shins, rough elbows and hands that sting after washing. The good news is that most winter dryness comes down to a few habits you can change, and you don't need a cabinet full of products to do it.
Here is a simple, natural winter body care routine that actually works, plus the mistakes that quietly make dry skin worse.
Why skin gets so dry in winter
Your skin's outer layer holds water with the help of natural oils (lipids). In winter that barrier gets hit from three directions:
- Low humidity. Cold air holds less moisture, and indoor heating dries it out even more. Water leaves your skin faster.
- Hot showers. Very hot water strips the oils that keep moisture in.
- Harsh cleansers. Many conventional body washes rely on strong sulfate detergents and synthetic fragrance, which can leave skin feeling "squeaky clean" and tight.
So the fix has two parts: stop stripping the barrier, and help it rebuild with plant oils and butters that are close to what your skin makes on its own.
The 7-step natural winter routine for dry skin
1. Shower shorter and cooler
Keep showers to around 5–10 minutes and use warm water, not hot. Many people notice a difference within a week. Pat dry with a towel instead of rubbing.
2. Switch to a gentle, plant-based cleanser
Look for a body wash made from plant oils rather than sulfates. True castile soap, made from plant oils like olive and coconut, cleans without leaving that tight feeling. Our Organic Castile Body Wash is sulfate-free, 100% vegan and scented only with essential oils, so there's no synthetic fragrance to irritate dry patches. (It also comes unscented.)
3. Exfoliate once a week (not every day)
Flaky skin needs dead cells cleared away so moisturizer can reach the fresh skin underneath. But over-scrubbing damages the barrier further. Once a week is plenty in winter.
The traditional Moroccan hammam method is one of the gentlest ways to do it: apply Moroccan Black Soap to damp skin, leave it on for 5 minutes in the steam of your shower, rinse, then buff with a kessa glove. Ours is made the traditional way from crushed olives, olive oil and argan oil, so skin comes out smooth rather than raw.
4. Moisturize within 3 minutes of getting out
This is the single most important step. Right after a shower your skin is still damp, and that's when a rich moisturizer can seal the water in. Wait too long and the water evaporates first.
In winter, a lotion usually isn't enough. Lotions are mostly water. Dermatologists generally recommend thicker creams, ointments or butters in cold weather. Our best-selling Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter is made with organic argan butter, mango butter, argan oil and jojoba oil, all rich in vitamin E and fatty acids. It's whipped, so it melts in quickly instead of sitting greasy on top.
Tip: Focus on shins, elbows, knees, heels and the backs of your hands. These areas have fewer oil glands and dry out first.
5. Give hands and feet an overnight treatment
Before bed, apply a generous layer of body butter to your hands and feet, then put on cotton socks (and cotton gloves if you have them). By morning, rough heels and knuckles feel noticeably softer. Do this two or three nights a week through the cold months.
6. Protect skin outdoors
Wear gloves and a scarf in cold, windy weather to shield your skin from wind and cold air. Protect your lips with a plant-based balm or a drop of argan oil.
7. Add moisture to the air
Run a humidifier in your bedroom at night so your skin isn't losing water while you sleep.
Winter skin mistakes to avoid
- Scented lotions with alcohol. Alcohol high on the ingredient list can dry skin further. Check labels.
- Skipping moisturizer on "good" days. Consistency matters more than any single product.
- Licking chapped lips. Saliva evaporates fast and leaves lips drier.
- Scratchy fabrics. Wool directly against dry skin can make itching worse. Layer a soft cotton base underneath.
- Drinking less water because it's cold. You still lose water in winter, it's just less obvious.
Add aromatherapy to make it a ritual
A routine sticks when you enjoy it. Add 2–3 drops of lavender essential oil to a diffuser, or blend a few drops into a carrier oil for your bath, to turn your evening routine into something you look forward to. Our Organic Essential Oils Kit includes lavender, orange, lemon, peppermint and ginger. Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil before putting them on skin.

Frequently asked questions
Is body butter better than lotion for dry skin in winter?
For most people, yes. Lotions are water-based and absorb quickly, but they don't leave much protection behind. Body butters are made mostly of plant fats, so they form a longer-lasting layer that slows water loss. Many people use lotion in summer and switch to butter from October to March.
Can I use body butter on my face?
Ours is gentle enough for face and body. That said, if your facial skin is oily or breakout-prone, a lightweight oil like our Argan & Prickly Pear Face Serum is a better daily fit.
How often should I exfoliate dry skin in winter?
Once a week is enough for most people. If your skin is red, stinging or cracked, skip exfoliation until it heals.
Is natural skincare safe for sensitive skin?
Natural doesn't automatically mean non-irritating. Plant ingredients and essential oils can still cause reactions in some people. Patch test any new product on your inner arm for 24 hours first. If you have eczema, psoriasis or skin that cracks and bleeds, see a dermatologist.
The bottom line
Winter dryness isn't something you just have to put up with. Shorter, cooler showers, a gentle cleanser, weekly exfoliation and a rich body butter applied to damp skin help most people get softer, more comfortable skin within a couple of weeks. Keep it simple and stay consistent.
