If you only own one essential oil, it's probably lavender. Its soft, floral scent is calming, it blends with almost everything, and it's one of the most studied essential oils in aromatherapy. Here's what lavender oil is good for and how to get the most out of it.
What is lavender essential oil?
Lavender essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowering tops of Lavandula angustifolia, also called true lavender or English lavender. Its scent is floral, herbal and slightly sweet.
Benefits of lavender oil
1. Helps you relax and unwind
Lavender is the go-to oil for stress. Several studies have found that inhaling lavender scent may help people feel calmer and less anxious. A few drops in a diffuser at the end of the day is an easy way to signal "time to slow down."
2. Supports better sleep
Research suggests lavender aromatherapy may improve sleep quality for some people. Try diffusing it in your bedroom for 30 minutes before bed, or add a drop to a tissue tucked inside your pillowcase.
3. A gentle addition to skincare
Lavender is one of the most skin-friendly essential oils when properly diluted. Many people add it to a carrier oil for a calming massage oil or a soothing after-shower body oil.
4. A scalp-care favorite
Lavender is a popular addition to scalp oils. An animal study found it supported hair growth, though human research is still limited. It pairs well with rosemary; see our rosemary oil for hair growth guide.
5. A natural room and linen freshener
Mix 10–15 drops with water in a spray bottle (shake before each use) for a fresh linen and pillow spray.
How to use lavender oil
- Diffuser: 3–5 drops in water.
- Massage oil: 6 drops in 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of carrier oil, such as argan oil.
- Bath: mix 3–5 drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil first, then add to the bath. Oil and water don't mix, so never drop it straight in.
- Pillow: 1 drop on a tissue near (not on) your pillow.
- Scalp: 2–3 drops in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil, massaged in before washing.
Lavender blends well with
Orange, peppermint, eucalyptus and vanilla. For a cozy evening blend, try 3 drops lavender + 2 drops orange.
Side effects and safety tips
Lavender is one of the gentlest essential oils, but it can still cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction in some people, especially when used undiluted or when old and oxidized.
- Always dilute before putting it on skin, and patch test first.
- Don't swallow essential oils.
- Check with your doctor before use if you're pregnant, breastfeeding or have a medical condition.
- Keep away from children and pets. Cats are especially sensitive to essential oils.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put lavender oil directly on my skin?
It's best not to. Even gentle oils like lavender can irritate or sensitize skin over time when used neat. Dilute it in a carrier oil first.
Does lavender oil really help you sleep?
Several studies suggest lavender aromatherapy can improve sleep quality for some people. It's not a sleep medication, but it's a relaxing part of a bedtime routine.
Is lavender oil safe to diffuse around pets?
Use caution. Cats are especially sensitive to essential oils. Diffuse in a well-ventilated room your pet can leave, and never apply oils to animals.
How long does lavender oil last?
About 2–3 years unopened. Once opened, store it cool and dark with the cap tight and use within a year or two.
