Peppermint oil is the wake-up call of the essential oil world. One sniff and you feel more alert. It's a favorite for long workdays, tension relief and scalp care. Here's how to use it well, and safely, since it's one of the stronger oils.
What is peppermint essential oil?
Peppermint oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of Mentha × piperita. Its main active compound is menthol, which gives it that cooling, tingling feel.
Benefits of peppermint oil
1. Boosts focus and energy
Peppermint's sharp scent can make you feel more awake and alert. Diffuse it at your desk during the afternoon slump instead of reaching for another coffee.
2. Eases tension headaches
Studies have found that diluted peppermint oil rubbed on the temples and forehead may help relieve tension-type headaches. The cooling sensation is a big part of why it feels so good.
3. Cools tired muscles
Add it to a massage oil for sore shoulders, neck or feet after a long day.
4. A refreshing scalp treatment
Many people add a drop or two of peppermint to their scalp oil for the tingly, refreshing feeling. Early research suggests it may support hair growth, though human studies are still limited. Read more in our rosemary oil for hair growth guide.
5. May ease queasiness
Some small studies suggest that inhaling peppermint may help with nausea. Smelling it from a tissue is the simplest way to try it.
6. Freshens the air
Peppermint's clean scent works well in kitchens, bathrooms and gym bags.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put peppermint oil directly on my skin?
No. It can burn or irritate. Always dilute it, using about 1 drop per teaspoon of carrier oil for the face and temples.
Can I add peppermint oil to my shampoo?
Yes. Add 1–2 drops to a palmful of shampoo for a cooling, refreshing wash. Keep it away from your eyes.
Does peppermint oil keep spiders and mice away?
It's a popular home remedy, but research is mixed. It may help a little, but it isn't a reliable pest control method.
