Eucalyptus leaves on a branch

Eucalyptus Essential Oil: Benefits, Uses and Side Effects

Few scents say "fresh" like eucalyptus. Its crisp, camphor-like aroma is a staple in spas and a favorite during cold and flu season. Here's how to use it at home.

What is eucalyptus essential oil?

Eucalyptus oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of the eucalyptus tree, most often Eucalyptus globulus. Its main compound, 1,8-cineole (also called eucalyptol), gives it its sharp, clearing scent.

Benefits of eucalyptus oil

1. Helps you feel like you can breathe easier

Inhaling eucalyptus can give a cool, open feeling in the nose when you're stuffed up. It's a common ingredient in chest rubs and steam inhalations for that reason. It won't cure a cold, but it can make you feel more comfortable.

2. Turns your shower into a spa

The warm steam carries the scent and makes your morning shower feel like a treat.

3. Soothes tired muscles

Diluted in a carrier oil, eucalyptus has a gentle cooling effect that feels great on sore muscles after a workout.

4. Freshens the home

Its clean scent works well in bathrooms and homemade cleaning sprays.

How to use eucalyptus oil

  • Shower steam: put 3–4 drops on a washcloth and place it on the shower floor, away from the direct stream.
  • Steam bowl: add 2–3 drops to a bowl of hot (not boiling) water, close your eyes, and breathe in the steam for a few minutes.
  • Diffuser: 3–5 drops.
  • Massage oil: 4–5 drops in 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of carrier oil such as argan oil.

Eucalyptus blends well with

Peppermint, lavender, lemon and tea tree. For a winter "breathe easy" diffuser blend, try 3 drops eucalyptus + 2 drops peppermint + 1 drop lemon.

Side effects and safety tips

Used on skin without dilution, eucalyptus can cause irritation. Swallowing it can be dangerous.

  • Toxic if swallowed, even in small amounts. Store out of reach of children.
  • Don't use on or near the face of babies and young children.
  • Keep away from the eyes, and always dilute before skin use.
  • Toxic to pets, especially cats. Don't diffuse it in a room they can't leave.
  • Check with your doctor if pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you have asthma or another medical condition.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rub eucalyptus oil on my chest?

Adults can, if it's well diluted (about 3–4 drops per tablespoon of carrier oil). Don't use it on young children's chests or faces.

Does eucalyptus oil help with a cold?

It can make you feel less stuffy and more comfortable, but it doesn't treat the cold itself.

Is it safe to diffuse eucalyptus around kids?

Avoid diffusing it around babies and young children. For older kids, diffuse briefly in a well-ventilated room.

Can I add eucalyptus oil to my bath?

Yes. Mix 3–4 drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil first, then add to the water.
